Kathmandu, Nepal – August 22, 2024 – The Export-Import Bank of Korea ("Korea Eximbank"), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) of the Government of Nepal, and the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) consulting team successfully concluded the "Transformation of the Bricks Industry in Nepal towards Eco-friendly Bricks Production" project, in Kathmandu. This final seminar marked the culmination of a significant initiative aimed at greening Nepal's brick manufacturing industry, a sector that contributes approximately 10% to the country's GDP but is in need of improvements to become more environmentally sustainable.
Funded by Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP) is a platform for development cooperation, sharing knowledge with partner countries for socioeconomic development. The project, funded by the Government of Korea under KSP, was implemented by InnoCSR and Reserve Carbon Co., Ltd., aimed to address the industry needs and government policy gaps in adopting greener methods of brick productions. The initiative focused on Korea’s case of incentivizing the transition through green certifications and government subsidies.
During the seminar, key stakeholders, including government authorities, industry experts, and international organizations, were presented with the project's major outcomes. These included comprehensive analysis of the brick industry's value chain, the promotion of eco-friendly brick technologies, and policy recommendations for scaling up sustainable practices. The seminar also highlighted a roadmap for transitioning to cleaner brick manufacturing processes in Nepal, with the goal of fostering informed decision-making and collaboration among stakeholders.
Speakers at the event included Sangha Hwang, Director at Korea Export-Import Bank of Korea, who opened the seminar, and Dr. Narayan Adhikari, Deputy Executive Director of AEPC, who emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly technologies. Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies, Krishna Bahadur Raut, expressed optimism about the future of eco-friendly brick production in Nepal in his remarks.
Sam Yoonsuk Lee, CEO of InnoCSR and Principal Investigator of the project, presented the detailed findings and results. The event concluded with the way forward plans of enhancing eco-friendly brick transitions, by GGGI Nepal’s Country Director, Dr. Lasse Ringius.
This project has set a strong foundation for the sustainable transformation of Nepal's brick industry, offering a path towards cleaner production practices that align with the country's environmental and economic goals. The insights shared during the seminar are expected to have a lasting impact, guiding future initiatives aimed at reducing pollution and promoting green growth in Nepal.
